Buckwheat Pancakes on New Year’s Day

This morning I enjoyed buckwheat pancakes that my beloved bride made. They were very good, not always an easy thing to accomplish.

Having buckwheat pancakes on New Year’s Day is an old Maney family tradition. I don’t know when it started or why, but I do have vivid memories of my grandma Maney making them and having to wear a mask because she was allergic to buckwheat! Mom, dad, and I would go next door to grandma’s house on New Year’s Day to have them for brunch and there grandma was in her kitchen, all decked out like a stagecoach robber, making buckwheats. I love memories like that.

Later as a young man, I would go to my best friend’s dad’s house for his annual Bloody Mary party on New Year’s Day. It was a great way to spend the day, watch a ton of football, and catch up with the old fella and his buddies.

What about you? Do you have any New Year’s Day memories?
